Karlstad University has an opening for a PhD student in physics with a focus on theoretical high-energy physics and string theory.

Theoretical high-energy physics is a research area in physics that encompasses some of the most fundamental questions in physics, about the smallest building blocks of nature and their interactions, but also seemingly disparate topics such as the evolution of the universe. In this field some of the most successful disciplines of modern physics meet, for example, the theory of relativity and quantum physics. The observations thatt hese theories rely on come primarily from particle accelerator laboratories and from space telescopes.

One framework in this area of theoretical physics is called string theory, which is an effort to unify particle physics and gravitational theory. It is not the only framework available in theoretical high-energy physics, but it leads to many surprising perspectives.

As a PhD student focusing on theoretical high-energy physics, you will have the opportunity to search for new insights into the basic laws of nature that control physical phenomena. You will also have the opportunity to stay in touch with current experiments and observations in this field, through close ties with the Oskar Klein Centre in Stockholm.

Some advanced mathematical background will be needed, part of which can be acquired during the course of the PhD studies.

Further information: Karlstad is a town located on the northern shores of Swedenʼs largest lake, close to the foothills of the Scandinavian Mountains. It is a 2.5 hour direct train ride west of Stockholm, and living costs are significantly lower than in the capital city. English is adequate for most purposes.

Eligibility requirements: Four- or five-year undergraduate physics degree, including a senior thesis, preferably on a relevant topic. A Masterʼs degree in physics is desirable. Fluency in English required.

Admission: By individual assessment. Required materials are curriculum vitae, degree certificate, official course summary with grades, copy of senior or Masterʼs thesis, and two letters of reference.

Teaching: The position may include a maximum of 20% teaching duties, leading to correspondingly extended employment.
