Norway : PhD Research Fellow in Microbial evolutionary biology

Sponsored Links

A 3-year PhD position (stipendiat, SKO 1017) in microbial evolutionary biology is available at the Department of Biology. The PhD candidate will be part of a strategic programme in Microbial Evolution (MERG) at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural sciences, but will also collaborate with other research groups at the University of Oslo and University of Barcelona.

Applications and inquiries are invited from qualified, motivated and enthusiastic students wishing to pursue a PhD-degree in microbial evolution, with particular emphasis on evolution of regulatory RNA molecules among single celled eukaryotes. A major goal for the research is to understand the diversity of such regulatory elements among the Choanozoa and relate these molecules to the evolutionary transition from unicellular eukaryotes to multicellular animals. The project will be done with bioinformatics and RNA sequencing approaches.

The applicant should hold a Cand Scient/MSc or equivalent in biology and have considerable experiences with programming/scripting in JAVA, Python/Perl, C++ and HTML, as well as bioinformatics programming for both high performance computing and PCs. In addition, the position requires strong background in molecular biology, cell biology and experience with RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and characterization of proteins. Furthermore, the candidate should have some experience with cell culturing, preferably growing of heterotrophic unicellular eukaryotes. The applicant must have serious research interests in microbial evolution. In addition, because this research project is a collaboration with Spanish research groups, it is advantageous to speak Spanish.

The MERG research group has access to well-equipped pro- and eukaryote culturing facilities, a Roche 454FLX Genome sequencer, and extensive microscopy and bioinformatics infrastructures. The PhD student will be supported by collaborative students and professors within bioinformatics, genomics, taxonomy and field-oriented evolutionary and ecological research.

Requirements

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (Cand.Scient., M.Sc., or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the Faculty's research training programme. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission approved within three months.

Salary
