Norway : Doctoral research fellowship in early Christianity Studies

A position as doctoral research fellow (post code 1017) is available at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas (IFIKK).

The position will be part of an ongoing history of ideas research project on traditions and conceptions of children and childhood in early Christianity (late antiquity and early medieval times). A central element in the project is the study of early Christian apocryphal infancy gospels. This is a very diverse material which had its roots in the second century CE, but which became widely disseminated culturally, geographically, in different languages, and through the centuries.

The object of the PhD. position will be research on this material.The doctoral project can be developed in different directions, for example oriented towards cultural history, tradition history, or social history. This will depend on the interests and qualifications of the PhD-student and on the requirements of the research project at large.

Candidates who are accepted must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ researcher education program (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis. The designated aim of the project is to complete a doctoral dissertation to be defended at a public disputation for the Ph.D.-degree.

The position is available for a period of three years.

Qualifications

  • A Master degree or equivalent in History of Ideas, Classics, Theology, History of Religion or Philosophy, or other related fields.
  • As a prerequisite the candidate must demonstrate basic language skills in ancient Greek and/or Latin, or in other languages of Antiquity.

Personal Skills

  • In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame.
  • The candidate must demonstrate good cooperative skills, and the ability to successfully join in academic partnerships across disciplines.

The short-listed candidates will be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.
