Switzerland : PhD Position in Hydrogeology

Sponsored Links

The Chair of Engineering Geology at ETH Zurich invites applications for a PhD position in the area of heat flow in porous and fractured rock at site scales. The successful candidate must have an MSc in earth sciences or related field and be strongly interested in research. Knowledge and experience in hydrogeology, in-situ testing or groundwater flow modeling are of prime importance. Good communication and writing skills are desired.

This position will complement current research on high resolution hydraulic field testing, hydraulic tomography and geothermal energy. The research work is based on field experiments carried out at 3 to 4 potential study sites in the Swiss Molasse Basin and the Alps in Switzerland (shallow aquifers and/or underground research laboratories).

The goal of this research project is to improve our detailed understanding of the transient pressure distribution, swept area and heat flow in response to fluid and heat injection in reservoir rocks at site scales. The primary focus of this thesis is on the investigation of the specific transport properties of heat in porous and fractured aquifers and to develop new thermal and hydraulic test protocols for well-controlled field scale experiments. At the selected study sites in porous and fractured aquifers repeated field experiments with artificial thermal tracer impulses will be conducted. Comparison to transport of solutes (i.e. salt tracer tests) is utilized to distinguish convective and conductive transport components. Numerical and analytical models will be used for design and interpretation. The duration of the position is approximately 3 years and can be filled by the successful candidate in summer 2011.

The Engineering Geology group consists of approximately 20 multidisciplinary scientists involved in a leading research and teaching program in quantitative engineering geology and hydrogeology. Detailed information about the Earth Science Department and the Chair of Engineering Geology is available on the web: www.engineering-geology.ethz.ch. For further information regarding the advertised position please contact Dr. Peter Bayer, Engineering Geology, ETH Zurich.

Complete applications should be sent by e-mail a.s.a.p. to bayer@erdw.ethz.ch, and must include the following: 1) Cover letter; 2) Curriculum vitae which describes your complete personal details and career history; 3) Complete course grades and transcripts; 4) If available: digital copies of both BSc and MSc theses.
