Switzerland : PhD position on Modelling Relativistic Fluid Dynamics using Lattice Boltzmann Methods

Sponsored Links

The Computational Physics group at the Institute for Building Materials, ETH Zurich (http://www.ifb.ethz.ch/comphys) is developing and applying numerical methods and simulations to many different areas ranging from general statistical physics, sociophysics, and complex fluids, to material science and geomorphology. The group is multinational and offers a creative environment, with many possibilities for interdisciplinary collaborations.

We are looking for a PhD student to work on the

Modelling Relativistic Fluid Dynamics using Lattice Boltzmann Methods.

Relativistic fluid dynamics plays a major role in many fields of modern physics, e.g. in astrophysics, nuclear, high-energy physics, and also in condensed matter physics. The dynamics of such systems requires solving highly nonlinear equations, rendering the analytic treatment of practical problems extremely difficult. Very recently, a new Lattice Boltzmann (LB) scheme for relativistic fluids has been proposed, which fills a gap in the remarkably broad spectrum of LB applications across most areas of fluid dynamics, including quantum fluids. The goal of this project is to extend the theoretical framework of the proposed scheme and develop new generalizations to account for ultra-relativistic and quantum effects.
The project is funded by ETH Zürich and will be done in close collaboration with Prof. Sauro Succi from the Istituto Applicazioni Calcolo of the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome.

Applicants should have a Diploma or Master degree in physics or related area, strong programming skills and interest in numerical simulations and interdisciplinary topics.
