PhD Research Fellowship position at Department of Electric Power Engineering within the area Power system transients - transformer modelling – IME-037-2011

At the department of Electric Power Engineering there is 1 vacant position as research fellow (PhD position) within “Power System transients”, with focus on transformers.

The Research fellowship is part of a project entitled “Electromagnetic transients in future power systems” (www.sintef.no/Projectweb/EMTransients/), organized at SINTEF Energy Research in co-operation with relevant international industries and the Research council of Norway. The main objective is to “Develop and demonstrate tools for the evaluation of land-based and offshore power systems in order to ensure increased reliability of the supply and minimize the risk for failures due to unexpected interactions. This will be achieved with the development of computational models of grid components for assessing transient voltages and currents in power grids, thereby enabling reliable operation of the future system”.

The proposed PhD project will focus on power transformer modelling. The power transformer is an important component in all power systems and its operation is crucial for system reliability. Existing approaches for low frequency modelling should be extended and developed to cover higher frequencies. The practical engineering aspects are emphasized which means general lack of design information. The aim is to develop a general purpose model enabling simulation of switching transients and resonance situations.

The PhD will be associated with a group of PhD students at NTNU working with transformers, SINTEF researchers, a PostDoc at the technical university in Delft and other national and international partners. High motivation and good analytical and communication skills will be emphasized in the employment process.

The applicants must have a background corresponding to a Master of Science or equivalent, in the relevant field.

NTNU’s PhD-rules require a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html

Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent on specified work. This work is primarily linked to teaching and is usually divided so that a relatively large part is done in the first half of the period of the appointment.

The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 48-61 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK. 391.100- 489.900 per annum (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 48. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges.

The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants must agree to participate in organised doctoral study programmes within the period of the appointment. The successful applicants must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award holders.
