Denmark : PhD Stipend in Probabilistic Modelling of Wind Turbine Drivetrain Components

Sponsored Links

The PhD stipend is affiliated with the research centre ‘Knowledge based engineering for improved reliability of critical wind turbine components’ (REWIND) funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research. It is the overall purpose of the centre to perform strategic research at the highest level in the field of materials-manufacturing-properties-performance of metallic components in the rotor and drivetrain in large wind turbines, with the ultimate aim of enhancing the reliability, extending the lifetime and arriving at an improved life expectancy prediction of such components.

This PhD stipend is one of eleven funded through the REWIND research project - two are placed with Aalborg University and the others are placed with the Technical University of Denmark. Further, the following industrial partners participate in the centre: DONG Energy, Vattenfall, Vestas Wind Systems and Magma.

In the PhD project 'Probabilistic modelling of wind turbine drivetrain components’ focus is on development of probabilistic models for assessment of the reliability of drivetrain components. Stochastic models are to be developed for initial damage/defect sizes and distribution in time and space for selected, critical components in the nacelle and hub such as bearings, gearbox and hub. Probabilistic damage accumulation models will be formulated based on the results in workpackages in the centre. The stochastic modeling is to be based on theoretical considerations and the quality control in the manufacturing process and from various types of tests: coupon, subcomponent, full-scale, downscaled and accelerated tests.

Qualification requirements:

You may obtain further information from Professor John Dalsgaard Sørensen, Department of Civil Engineering, phone: +45 9940 8581, email: jds@civil.aau.dk concerning the technical aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
