Norway : PhD Research Fellow in Fluid Mechanics

The successful applicant must work in the field of Fluid Mechanics. The position is linked to a Research Council of Norway (RCN) project (2011-2014) on rock slide tsunamis in Norwegian fjords. This a collaborative project between the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), which involves both extensive modeling and experiments. The latter include wave generation by rock slides in a three dimensional fjord model at the SINTEF Coast and Harbour Research Laboratory, Trondheim, and in the wave tank at the Hydrodynamics Laboratory, University of Oslo. The PhD fellow will mainly be responsible for the numerical modeling of the slide impact and the subsequent wave generation with Navier Stokes models.

The position is a pure research position, and is for a period of 3-three years.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in fluid mechanics. In the evaluation of the applicants, particular attention will be paid to the scientific qualifications within crucial topics of fluid mechanics. The applicant must document experience on implementation or analysis of numerical techniques for solution of the Navier Stokes, or related equations, preferably with free surfaces. A good background in fluid dynamics and programming skills in languages like Fortran or C++ is a prerequisite. Moreover, documented knowledge on theory and modeling of hydrodynamic waves will also be positively valued.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months. Salary:

Pay grade: 48 - 56 (NOK 391 100 – 448 100 per year)
