Norway : PhD Research Fellow in Geology

Sponsored Links

A position as Research fellow (PhD) is available at the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. The fellowship is for a period of 3 years, starting as soon as possible.

The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth - the atmosphere, the hydrosphere (including oceans, freshwater and glaciers), the earth's surface and its interior. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo comprises sections for Environmental Geology and Hydrology; Tectonics, Petrology and Geochemistry; Petroleum Geology and Geophysics; Meteorology and Oceanography, and Physical Geography. The Department is affiliated with four Centers of Excellence. The faculty consists of 40 professors and approximately 80 research fellows. For more information, see http://www.geo.uio.no.

Job Description

The position is connected to the project “Barents Sea Tectonic Basin Modelling

with focus on potential petroleum systems in the Central Barents Sea Region” (BarMod), which is funded by the Research Council of Norway and Statoil under the Petromaks Programme. Partners are Volcanic Basin Petroleum Research (VBPR) in Norway and VNIIOkeangeologia and Marine Arctic Geological Expedition (MAGE) in Russia.

The primary objective of the project is to use state-of-the-art numerical codes to model the tectonic and thermal evolution of the sedimentary basins of the Barents Sea, particularly in the central area where the border between Norway and Russia has been recently resolved. The modelling will examine the linkage between deep crustal and mantle processes and the effects of such processes on the formation and development of sedimentary basins and fluid flow within these basins. To enhance the understanding of such processes, analogue mechanical models will be utilized.

The expected results include:

  • A refined crustal architecture and basin configuration of the Central Barents Sea
  • A detailed geohistory of basin development in the Central Barents Sea
  • Enhanced understanding for the effects of plate-scale stresses on basin formation and the development of hydrocarbon traps
  • Review of potential play models
  • Temperature history and hydrocarbon maturation windows in the sedimentary basins
  • Improved understanding of fluid flow (hydrocarbons, meteoric water) in basins
  • Improved understanding of the wavelength, amplitude and timing of vertical movements during Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic times
  • Sensitivity analysis - input to exploration risking

Requirements

Applicants must hold a masters degree in geology/geophysics or a related field. Preferably the candidate should document experience within one or more of the following disciplines/tasks:

  • Integrated analysis of geological and geophysical data
  • Basin analysis – structure, stratigraphy and evolution
  • Modelling – numerical and/or analogue
  • Linking deep and shallow structures - the role of basement grain/inheritance
  • Linking onshore and offshore geology

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Firstly, the applicants must have obtained undergraduate (Cand.mag., i.e. B.Sc. level) and postgraduate (Cand.Scient., M.Sc., or Siv.ing., i.e. M.Sc. level) qualifications. This represents approximately five years of full time studies after completion of European Upper Secondary School/International Baccalaureate. Appointment to a research fellowship is conditional upon admission to the Faculty's research training programme. An approved plan for the research training must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission approved within three months.
