Netherlands : PhD variational consistent modelling of the interior fluid motion in boussinesq Equations

Sponsored Links

In STW project 11642 ‘Deterministic wave modelling and simulation for offshore and harbour applications’ with two PhD’s and one post-doc, there is a vacancy for one PhD for research on the topic described below. The research is embedded in the Dutch research institute (national onderzoekschool) JM Burgers Centre.

Modelling and simulation of waves in the coastal area has to take various effects into account: dispersion (wavelength dependent propagation speeds), nonlinearity (energy exchange between waves) and bottom variations (from deep ocean to shallow coast). The interplay between these effects is intricate, especially because the range of wave periods is quite large, from 5 seconds for short wind waves to 2 minutes for long waves generated by nonlinear effects and the bathymetry. In past research we have designed two different models, with various numerical implementations, that perform this task quite well when compared to other codes. The basis of these models is the variational structure that underlies the exact formulation of surface waves, and the consequence that the equations can be formulated as a Hamiltonian system in quantities at the surface only, so-called Boussinesq equations. In this formulation, the interior fluid motion has been modelled in a simplified way. In this project we will improve this internal fluid motion with the aim to be able to calculate accurately forces on ships and on floating and fixed offshore structures (wind mills, LNG-platforms). The research is executed in collaboration with the other PhD student and the post-doc, and with MARIN hydrodynamic laboratory where specifically designed experiments will be executed. Through the STW user-committee of this project, input from SHELL, Alkyon/Arcadis and TUDelft can be expected.

De organisatie / The organisation
The University of Twente. We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology which drives change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands; divided over six faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. The University of Twente has a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out pioneering research.

In the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EWI) is the place where these three disciplines shape Information and Communication Technology at the University of Twente. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology are present, and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. It is no longer about gadgets that we do or do not want to use. The real integration of ICT is just beginning. What we need is more intelligence in our systems and improvement of their natural interaction with humans.
