PhD position in Linear and Non-linear VUV and X-ray Atomic and Molecular Physics

at the Department of Physics and Astronomy with earliest possible starting date 2012-01-01.

Project description: A PhD student position is available within the Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics at Uppsala University. The funding period is 4 years, or 5 years if 20 % departmental duties are included.

The Division of Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics carries out world-class research on the electronic structure and dynamics of matter. The division has a strong background in instrument development for these purposes and uses frequently state-of-the art, large-scale VUV and X-ray light sources for the actual scientific investigations.

The PhD project announced here concerns the use of magnetic bottle electron correlation spectrometers to study single- and multi-photon ionisation processes of atoms, molecules, and clusters, aiming at detailed understanding of matter exposed to VUV and X-radiation. The experimental work will be performed in house at the Ångström laboratory, at Synchrotron Radiation facilities such as BESSY-II in Berlin as well as at unique, world-leading X-ray Free Electron Laser sources such as the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at Stanford, California etc.

Qualifications required: An appropriate undergraduate exam in Physics or Chemistry (or equivalent) is needed before admission, but does not have to be completed by the application deadline.

The application should also include a CV; extract of undergraduate studies including grades; copy of the undergraduate thesis (finished or in draft form); names and contact information of two reference persons; other relevant material for our selection process. Good programming skills will be considered as an extra merit.
