Norway : Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Higher Education Studies

Sponsored Links

A position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Higher Education Studies is available at the Department of Educational Research, Faculty of Education, at the University of Oslo (UiO).

We are searching for highly motivated candidates with a strong interest in higher education governance and organisation. The fellowship is for a period of two years, and will start January 1st, 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job Description

The position will be affiliated with a new research project funded by the programme “Norway – Global Partner” (Norglobal) in the Research Council of Norway. The aim of the project is to strengthen our understanding of the change dynamics of higher education with a special focus on the Western Balkan countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia). As such the project is expected to contribute to the knowledge basis concerning the crucial role that higher education and research have for economic growth and social development. This role has been identified by a number of key policy makers, nationally as well as supra-nationally. The EU has, for example, highlighted in its Lisbon Agenda and its Europe 2020 strategy this role through the recognition that the knowledge triangle nodes (education, research, innovation) are crucial for the future economic and social well-being of Europe. However, higher education can contribute to economic and social development in a variety of ways and to a varying degree, and it should be taken into account that the growing policy focus on the contribution of higher education to development has led to tensions at the institutional and system level. Examining relevant policy developments with respect to the knowledge triangle areas and the emerging tensions in the first place in Norway and the Western Balkan countries forms the core of the candidate’s work.

The project is expected to generate scientific publications, policy recommendations and a series of meetings/workshops with participants from Norway and the Western Balkan countries. Professor Bjørn Stensaker from the Department of Educational Research will lead the project, and in addition to the Post-doctoral fellow there will be two PhD candidates that work full-time in the project. Applicants must read the overall project description and fit their research project to the main goals and activities of the project. Applicants can obtain a project description from the following webpage
http://www.uv.uio.no/pfi/english/research/projects/eie-norglobal/

and additional scientific information about the project from Professor Bjørn Stensaker, Department of Educational Research.

Qualifications and Personal Skills

Candidates should have a Ph.D. equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in relevant areas of social and educational science, as well as experience with higher education studies as documented through academic degrees or course work, research and publishing. Documented knowledge about the specificities of the governance and organisation of Norwegian and/or Western Balkan higher education systems, will be viewed as a merit for the position. Experience of and interest in cross-disciplinary work will also be advantageous, along with familiarity with both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A good command of English is required.

Successful candidates must have submitted their doctoral thesis prior to the application closing date.
