Austria : POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS TO JOIN A NEW MEDICAL EPIGENOMICS LAB

Sponsored Links

We are looking for enthusiastic postdocs to join the new Medical Epigenomics Lab at CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The group of Christoph Bock combines experimental and computational methods for understanding the role of epigenome regulation in cancer, stem cells, and immune diseases.

THE INSTITUTE:
CeMM is an international and interdisciplinary research center for molecular medicine founded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Driven by medical needs, CeMM integrates basic research and clinical expertise to pursue innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches
focused on cancer, inflammation and immune disorders. CeMM is located in a new tailor-made building at the center of the Vienna Medical University campus. The official language at CeMM is English, as more than 30 different nationalities are represented.

THE LAB:
The lab of Christoph Bock combines large-scale epigenomics with stem  cell biology and computational modeling, in order to better understand and treat leukemia and other diseases of the blood system. The lab has access to state-of-the-art technologies including high-throughput sequencing, in vitro and in vivo models of hematopoiesis, and powerful
computational resources. The team members work closely with biologists and medical researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, aiming to advance personalized medicine through epigenome sequencing and bioinformatic innovation.

THE PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR:
Christoph Bock received his training in computer science and business science from the Universities of Mannheim and Heidelberg (Germany). He obtained a PhD in bioinformatics from the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, for which he was awarded an Otto Hahn Medal by the Max Planck Society. Christoph did his postdoc at the Broad Institute of
MIT and Harvard, contributing to the Roadmap Epigenomics Project
(http://www.broadinstitute.org/~cbock/). In parallel, Christoph led a
research group on computational epigenetics at the Max Planck
Institute for Informatics (http://www.computational-epigenetics.de).
His recent publications include papers in Cell, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Methods, Genome Research, Genome Biology, PLoS Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=9qSsTcIAAAAJ). Christoph also co-directs the
high-throughput sequencing platform at CeMM, and he is a visiting professor at the Medical University of Vienna as well as a work package leader in the European epigenome mapping project named BLUEPRINT (http://blueprint-epigenome.eu/).

THE PROJECT:
The lab is driven by the ideas of all its members. If you already have a project in mind, we would like to hear from you. If not, here are a few topics for inspiration: (i) Why is leukemia a disease of the elderly? Can we identify an “epigenetic clock” that counts down toward
leukemia? What is wrong with this clock in those rare cases of childhood leukemia? (ii) Can we construct a blood cancer from scratch, by inducing only epigenetic defects? Which combination of pathways provides the minimum core of an epigenetic leukemia? (iii) How can we make epigenome data useful for personalized medicine? Every physician uses Google – can we build a “Google for the epigenome”?

THE CANDIDATE:
We are looking for highly motivated and academically outstanding candidates who want to pursue a scientific career in the emerging field of medical epigenomics. An ideal candidate would have a background in either the biomedical sciences or a computational
discipline (bioinformatics, physics, engineering, etc.) and a strong interest to work together with collaborators in the entire spectrum of epigenetics, medical genomics and bioinformatics.

Please submit cover letter, CV and contact details of three referees to Anita Ender [aender@cemm.at]. Application Deadline: 15 November 2011
