Netherlands : PhD student: Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (C-MRI ASTRON)

Sponsored Links

The project will be carried out at the SPS Group under the leadership of Dr. M. Mischi with the support of Prof. Korsten. The SPS Group of the Electrical Engineering Dept of the Eindhoven University of Technology chaired by Prof. J.W.M. Bergmans is ranked among the best electrical engineering groups in the Netherlands. It has 4 IEEE Fellows, 1 Fellow of the Optical Society of America, and 1 Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society. This level of recognition is unmatched by any other group in the Netherlands, and by few other groups in the world. In addition, the SPS Group has a longstanding reputation in contrast dilution modeling and analysis, as evidenced by the numerous international publications and awards of Dr. M. Mischi, comprising, among others, the prestigious STW VIDI Grant and ERC Starting Grant.

Partners

The project will be carried out in tight collaboration with industrial and clinical partners. The industrial partners are Philips Healthcare (Clinical MRI), Medtronic (Bakken Research Center), Pie Medical Imaging, and Guerbet. The clinical partner is the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven.

Project description

Dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) permits analyzing hemodynamic processes, opening up new important diagnostic possibilities for several diseases. At the Signal processing Systems (SPS) Group of the Eindhoven University of Technology, we are focusing on development of new diagnostic tools for optimal management of congestive heart failure patients. In fact, efficient therapies are available, but the optimal selection of patients and treatments is complicated by the poor predictive value of the existing non-invasive diagnostics. By this project we propose a novel minimally-invasive method for the assessment of the transpulmonary circulation, providing doctors with a new powerful diagnostic tool.

DCE-MRI in the right and left side of the heart will be optimized to extract two reliable indicator dilution curves (IDCs), whose analysis by advanced signal processing and mathematical modeling is expected to permit the assessment of the transpulmonary circulation, providing accurate quantification of both pulmonary blood volume and extravascular lung water.

Requirements

We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate who has been graduated from a master program (MSc) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering. Excellent communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential.

The candidate should have strong background in at least one of the following areas:

- Signal processing

- Image analysis

- Hemodynamic modeling

- Magnetic resonance imaging

Good programming skills in MatLab or C++ are preferred.

Offer

The appointment is for four years. You will be an employee of the university with a competitive salary as well as excellent secondary benefits (holiday allowance, etc.). The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a PhD degree. A salary is offered starting at Euro 2042. - per month (gross) in the first year and increasing up to Euro 2612. - per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover 8% bonus share (holiday supplement) is provided annually, as well as a 8.3% end of year allowance. Assistance for finding accommodation can be given. TU/e offers you also the opportunity for personal development by developing your social and communication skills. We do this by offering every PhD student a series of courses that are part of the PROOF program as an excellent addition to your scientific education.
