Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, offers several PhD student positions (TV-L E 13) financed by the German Research Foundation (DFG) to applicants with an excellent graduate degree (master degree or diploma) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or closely related fields like Mathematics or Physics, with a salary according to TV-L E13 (full-time), for a maximum of 3 years.

The Research Training Group investigates fundamental problems in the area of sensor-actuator-networks. These include the whole spectrum ranging from data processing to communication and hardware/software system integration.
Research topics also include distributed information processing, query processing, content-based addressing schemes, energy efficiency, and self-organizing middleware. So far, research on sensor-actuator-networks has mainly focused on isolated aspects. One strong objective of the Training Group is to obtain integrated solutions that cover several aspects.
Integration will be achieved by close cooperation of experts from the different fields. Another far-reaching objective is the development of a systematic approach to sensor-actuator-network design.

Due to the customized curriculum, PhD students will obtain a broad overview within the area of self-organizing sensor-actuator-networks. In addition to lectures on specialized topics, a series of short lectures, seminars, and laboratory experiments are available. Weekly meetings are conducted in order to support  the team-building process. Furthermore, the PhD students have the possibility to perform exchange stays at labs of other international researchers.

The Research Training Group is looking for bright and very motivated graduate students with excellent grades. To increase the number of women working in science and technology, female applicants are specifically encouraged. Handicapped applicants will have higher preference in case of equal qualifications. Additional information on the Research Training Group is available at: www.grk1194.kit.edu

The selection of the graduate students will take place during a recruitment workshop in January 2012. Applications including the curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, letters of references, research interests, and an indication of the preferred subprojects should be submitted to the chairman of the Research Training Group by November 30th, 2011 by mail or by email:
