Norway : 3 PhD Research Fellowship positions within the area Smart Transmission Grids

3 PhD research fellowship positions are vacant within research projects related to Smart Transmission Grids. Two of the positions are related to power system operation and Wide Area Monitoring and Control. This research aims at developing new monitoring and control applications within transmission and distribution grids based on synchronous phasor measurements. The third position deals with design, operation and control of offshore high voltage DC grids.

 

The PhD fellowships are offered for a period of 3 years at the Department of Electric Power Engineering, NTNU. The PhD fellows will work on challenging research problems in a growing research team on Smart Grids at NTNU. All three projects will be carried out in close collaboration with other Nordic universities and the Nordic Transmission System Operators. Excellent laboratory facilities are available for implementation and testing of applications and methods. The projects are funded by Nordic Energy Research and the Research Council of Norway.

 

Applicants must have a MSc degree in electrical engineering, control systems or similar. A specialization in power system analysis and control is advantageous. Solid scientific qualifications, relevant MSc research topics and personal qualities are important. Foreign applicants must document a TOEFL Internet-based test score of 100 or higher. NTNU’s PhD-rules require a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent on specified work. This work is primarily linked to teaching and is usually divided so that a relatively large part is done in the first half of the period of the appointment.

 

The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 48-61 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK. 391.100- 489.900 per annum (before tax). PhD students are normally remunerated at wage level 48. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

 

Engagement as a PhD candidate is done in accordance with current appointment regulations with supplementary rules in force giving guidelines for scholarship appointments in universities and university colleges.

 

The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants must agree to participate in organised doctoral study programmes within the period of the appointment. The successful applicants must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award holders.
