Norway : 2 PhD Candidates in Geography

Two temporary positions as PhD candidates in Geography are available at the Department of Geography, NTNU. The appointments are for a period of three years. The positions will provide promising research students the opportunity for professional development while studying for a PhD. The positions are connected to the Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management’s PhD programme and the Faculty would be the employer.

 

The Department of Geography currently has 6 professors and 14 associate professors. The Department has five main areas of focus: 1) Urban, Rural and Regional Studies, 2) Development and Social Change in the South, 3) Landscape and Society, 4) Geographical Information Systems, and 5) Physical Geography (see http://www.ntnu.edu/geography). The PhD project proposal should relate to one or two of these areas.

 

The prerequisite for the position of PhD candidate in Geography is either a master’s degree in geography with a good result, or corresponding education to an equivalent level. Personal qualifications will be ascribed high importance.

 

The terms of employment will be in accordance with existing national regulations of 31 January 2006, with NTNU’s supplementary regulations of 17 June 2009. The applicant must commit to undertake organized PhD studies within the employment period. Employment as a PhD candidate requires admission to a PhD programme in Geography. The Application should be accompanied by a description of the research planned to be carried out in the PhD period. The project description should be ca. 8 pages. It will form the basis of the evaluation for admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty. A separate application for the PhD programme in Geography should be submitted. The Application should include a publications list, relevant sample publications (maximum 5), and the applicant’s CV with information on education and previous research experience, together with authorized documentation in the form of certificates and study records. Fluency in English is required.

 

The position as PhD candidate is paid according to salary scale 20, level 48, in the National Salary Scheme, gross NOK 32 591,70 per month, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.

 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.
