Civil Engineering and Geosciences

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences provides leading, international research and education in road and water engineering, earth sciences, traffic and transport control, and delta technology. Innovation and sustainability are central themes. The research addresses global social issues and is closely interwoven with education as well as with the work carried out by a broad spectrum of knowledge institutions. The faculty consists of 17 sections distributed among the Departments of Design & Construction, Hydraulic Engineering, Transport & Planning, Water Management and Geotechnology.

The Department of Hydraulic Engineering generates and disseminates academic knowledge in an internationally prominent Dutch tradition. The aim is to solve present-day social problems, such as the reduction of flood risks and the development of coastal zones, dike failure and evacuation in case of floods, sea level rise and dense population in coastal areas. In addition, the department deals with the behaviour of fluids, offshore technology, design of hydraulic structures and logistics of harbours and waterways.

Job description

This PhD position is part of the 5-year, multidisciplinary research programme 'Integral and sustainable design of multifunctional flood defences'. The programme's objective is to advance scientific knowledge to meet the upcoming challenges of flood mitigation in urban areas brought about by economic and climate change. Multi-functional flood defences provide not only flood protection but also opportunities for housing, recreation and leisure, ecology, mobility and transport, and underground infrastructure. This concept raises many issues regarding design and implementation, safety assessment, and management strategies. The programme aims to investigate these issues by linking comprehensive scientific research to on-the-ground (re)development projects.
This PhD project, 'Real options in the design of multi-functional flood defences', will focus on methods to deal with the considerable uncertainties that have to be faced when making decisions about flood defences and their immediate spatial context, which have long-term impacts. The PhD researcher will explore in particular the application of the theory of real options to the design of multifunctional flood defences, including further development of the method in this specific context. The project will involve both theoretical work on the real options methodology and applied case study research in cooperation with private and public parties.

Requirements

Applicants should have an MSc in a field with a strong quantitative modelling component, e.g., engineering, sciences, or quantitative economics. Furthermore, applicants should have:
• an interest in flood defences, economics, and economic approaches;
• the ability to cooperate with specialists in the field, in particular civil engineers and planners;
• excellent qualifications for academic work indicated, for example, by a high grade point average and a good/excellent grade for their MSc thesis.
Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organisation. A good command of English (written and spoken) is essential.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed by Delft University of Technology for a fixed period of four years within which he/she is expected to write a doctoral thesis.
