Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering

The 3ME Faculty trains committed engineering students, PhD candidates and post-doctoral researchers in groundbreaking scientific research in the fields of mechanical, maritime and materials engineering. 3ME is the epitome of a dynamic, innovative faculty, with a European scope that contributes demonstrable economic and social benefits.

The Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) conducts cutting-edge research and delivers scientific education in the field of precision mechanical engineering. It focuses on applications in high-tech systems and micro- and nanosystem technology by combining a multitude of physics principles with fundamental mechanical research and computational engineering. The vision is to integrate the new domains of micro- and nanoscience into mechanical engineering to create devices which serve society, the environment and humankind. This is achieved through engineering of and for systems on an extreme scale with subnanometre details, by studying both the micro- and nanodevices themselves and the high-technology tools required to create them.

Job description

Efficient energy storage and conversion processes rely to a large extent on properly designed, structured materials providing a platform for the chemistry but also the transport of gases and/or fluids. With the continuous developments in nanofabrication techniques, realisation of nanostructures specifically tailored to optimally facilitate certain desired chemical reactions has become feasible and offers promising scientific and commercial prospects. This project aims at the development of topology optimisation techniques to design the most efficient nanostructures for specific, targeted chemical processes. Challenges involve the inclusion of transport phenomena, chemical processes taking place at surfaces, and the transient and high-dimensional nature of the design problem.

Requirements

You can independently generate, explore and analyse novel concepts and communicate your ideas clearly. An MSc degree in applied physics, applied mathematics, chemical or mechanical engineering with an emphasis on computational methods is required. Affinity with chemistry and an interest in the interrelation between geometry and chemical reactions are important. Design optimisation experience is preferred. You have a strong academic record and a good command of the English language.

Conditions of employment

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
