Sweden : PhD position at the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine

Sponsored Links

Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) is looking for PhD fellows in the area of virology.

The laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine (MIMS, www.mims.umu.se) was established in 2007 as a partner institution of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (www.embl.org) together with the new Nordic nodes for molecular medicine in Finland and Norway. The aim of MIMS is to strengthen Swedish research and enhance the dynamics in the field of molecular medicine, partly by promoting the career opportunities for young scientists. MIMS is established within the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR, www.ucmr.umu.se) that includes researchers active in the fields of molecular and clinical microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry and physics and is closely connected to the university hospital. The position is available in the following area:

The project (Ref no 313-1220-11; Group Leader: Anna Överby).
Investigation of cellular factors contributing to tick-borne encephalitis virus pathogenicity.

In Europe, the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the most important arthropod-borne virus in humans. The TBEV strains from Central Europe, Siberia and the Far East cause a broad range of pathological symptoms. The severity of disease is strain-dependent, with higher pathogenicity witnessed in the Far Eastern strains. Since the molecular mechanism underlying this virus strain dependency remains elusive, the main goal of the project is to investigate host determinants that set the differences in the pathogenicity and the neuroinvasiveness seen between the different TBEV strains. The different TBEV strains will be compared for sequence homology and growth properties in vitro and in vivo with focus on the interplay between the virus and the host immune system. To achieve the goals of the project, different mouse models including wild type and knock out strains of mice will be used. This is collaboration between Anna Överby at Umeå University and Andrea Kröger at Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, Innate Immunity and Infection Braunschweig, Germany. 2-4 months per year will be spend in Germany and the rest in Sweden. For more information please contact Dr. Anna Överby (email: anna.overby@mims.umu.se)

The recruitment procedure will follow the Higher Education Ordinance (Högskoleförordningen chapters 5 and 7). Prerequisites at time of registration as PhD-student for all positions include either i) 240 ECTS
credits (swe. högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level within Molecular biology, Biomedicine, Biochemistry, bioengineering and/or Microbiology, or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence. This is equivalent to a European University Master degree. In addition, basic education in virology is also required. Applicants should have a high interest in the field of molecular biology, especially infection biology and virology, and be willing to take on a scientific and technical challenge. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology, animal work and microbiology/virology is highly desirable. All candidates need to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others and be highly motivated.

The proposed projects are starting March-April 2012 for a maximum period of 5 years. The successful candidates will participate in activities provided by the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS), Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR) at Umeå University and the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, thus providing interaction with researchers from different research fields and access to various scientific and technical expertise.

The application should include:
A signed letter of application describing your research interests (no more than one A4 page).
CV, including a list of university courses and certified copies of transcripts with grades.
Names, with contact details and e-mail addresses of two to three academic references.
Other relevant documentation you wish to include in support of your application.
All documents should be combined as one document in MS Word or PDF format.
The position will be covered by a postgraduate student allowance (“utbildningsbidrag”) for the first two years and the salary successively increases according to a stipulated scale in the last two years of the PhD position (“doktorandtjänst”). The position may require teaching up to 20% which will increase the total time of the position up to maximum five years.
