Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application:

PhD position in Computerized Image Analysis

at the Department of Information Technology, Centre for Image Analysis

The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The Department has about 200 employees, including 80 senior faculty and 80 PhD students. More than 3000 students are enrolled in one or more courses annually. More info:www.it.uu.se.

The Centre for Image Analysis (CBA) carries out research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. Focus is on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications within primarily biomedicine and forestry. More info: www.cb.uu.se.

The Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) at Linköping University is a multidisciplinary research center with engineering as well as medical scientists including the fields of radiology, image analysis and visualization. Focus is at development and evaluation of novel methods for collection, analysis and presentation of medical image information, in order to meet clinical needs and give answers to medical research questions.

This project will be in close cooperation between CBA and CMIV, with supervision from both centers.

Description of the subject area: The candidate will take part in a scientific project that aims at segmenting blood vessels in medical volumetric images at interactive rates in order to do precise geometrical measurements of the vessels. The job will consist of developing and validating new methods for segmentation of the vessels, based on a new, initially tested, concept.

Qualifications required: The candidate should have a Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent knowledge in subjects of relevance to this project. Experience of digital image analysis as well as of medical sciences is desirable

The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching) as well as course studies equivalent to 90hp. You will be expected to teach in Swedish or English. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement. As the position is in close cooperation with scientists in the biomedical field, experience and interest in biomedicine and medicine will be of merit.

The department is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance and female candidates are particularly invited to apply.

The application is web-based, see address below, and should include a brief description of research interests and past experience, a CV, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant publications, and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to include a description of themselves as well as reasons for wanting to become a PhD student. In addition, letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons, as well as earliest feasible starting date of employment should be provided. The rules governing this process can be found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen 5 Chapter 1-7 §§ and in University rules http://regler.uu.se/
