Denmark : PhD Stipend in Life time prediction methods for real time field operation

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy Technology (www.et.aau.dk) a PhD stipend within the general study programme Energy Technology is open for appointment from March 1, 2012 or soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

PhD Stipend in Life time prediction methods for real time field operation

The stipend is affiliated with the research Center of Realible Power Electronic (CORPE) sponsored by The Danish Council for Strategic Research

The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Aarhus University, Aachen University, Maryland University and ETH Zürich. The project also involves a close collaboration with the industrial partners Vestas Wind Power, Grundfos, Danfoss and KK-electronic.

The research area include methods for the real time (on-line) detection of the lifetime (wear-out) state of the power transistor (or power diode) by monitoring various relevant (thermal, electrical, optical etc.) sensor signals. During field operation, the developed methods of monitored life time consumption data should, at least after a certain period, give valuable insight in the robustness/reliability of the power converter design, the actual application stress impacts and the remaining operational life of the power converter.
The developed methods for life time prediction will most likely include sensors for measuring physical quantities (such as voltages, currents and temperatures), communication and software based models and signal processing.
Expected results: New methods for real time monitoring and prediction of life-time consumption (wear-out) of power modules, which are the most expensive and critical parts of power electronic converters.

Applicants for the PhD position should hold a Masters Degree in preferably Electrical Engineering with a strong background in semiconductors, electronic circuits and mathematical modelling. Interest in experimental work is relevant. A good command of oral and written English is also required.

You may obtain further information from Paul Thøgersen, phone: +45 2484 2174, email: patho@kk-electronic.com concerning the scientific aspects of the PhD stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff, The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email: ld@adm.aau.dk, phone: +45 9940 9589.

The faculty have a research school, The Doctoral School of Engineering and Science: www.phd.teknat.aau.dk and a Network for all PhD students: www.pau.aau.dk

The application is only to be submitted online by using the "Apply online" button below.

Agreement
Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of October 1, 2008 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance Circular of June 13, 2007 on the employment structure at Danish Universities
