Germany : 2 PhD positions in Energy Meteorology at ForWind, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg

Sponsored Links

The Energy Meteorology group of ForWind  - Center for Wind Energy Research, Institute of Physics, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg offers

2 PhD positions (75%).

The main topics of the vacancies are:
Generation of a CFD-based wind and stability atlas for the North Sea region (Position 1)
or
Coupling of a mesoscale model with models for the calculation of wake effects in wind parks (Position 2).

Your Project
The two successful candidates will work in the EU-FP7 project "A Toolbox for Offshore Wind Farm Cluster Design" in that in addition to ForWind further research and industrial partners from Germany, Belgium, Great Britain and the Netherlands are involved. The aim of the project is to combine and apply existing models on different aspects of a wind farm to optimize the layout of new wind farms and the operation of existing wind farms.

Your tasks

Position 1:
The wind and stability conditions in the North Sea Region will be determined by long-term, high-resolution simulations with the mesoscale model WRF resulting in a numerical wind and stability atlas for the planning of new offshore wind farms.  In the simulations, already existing or planned wind farms shall be taken into account.

Position 2:
A coupling between a mesoscale model and wake models will be developed to estimate wind farm yields with detailed consideration of wake effects. The wake models will be also applicable to the optimization of the operation of wind farms.  While fast wake models such as the engineering tool FLaP, developed by the University of Oldenburg, can be used to estimate the wind farm yield, large-eddy simulations of wake flows will be performed for more detailed load and validating yield calculations.

Your profile
A qualified scientific degree in meteorology, physics or a similar subject is required. You must have very good knowledge in the simulation of atmospheric flows, ideally on high performance computers, and you must have extensive experience in programming in Fortran. Linux as operating system is familiar to you. Knowledge of parallel programming (OpenMP, MPI) is regarded an advantage, as well as already existing experience in the highly interdisciplinary field of wind energy research. Furthermore, you have the ability and willingness to obtain a PhD degree as well as excellent skills in spoken and written English.
The two positions are initially limited to two years. An extension to three years with the possibility of completing a PhD thesis is planned. The two positions are available immediately, but no later than April 1st, 2012.
The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in science. Thus, women are strongly encouraged to apply. According to § 21 paragraph 3 NHG female candidates with equal qualifications are preferred to male candidates. Disabled persons are given preference, if they are equally qualified. The two vacancies are not suitable for part-time working. The salary will be 75% of a full-time position and is regulated by TV-L (German federal states’ employees salary scheme) grade E13.

Contact
Your application including the covering letter, CV, diploma or master certificate, letters of reference and publication list) should be sent not later than February 15th, 2012 to frauke.haunhorst@forwind.de . It is necessary that you quote the reference number Wind_2012_01 (position 1) or Wind_2012_02 (position 2).
Additional information concerning the two vacancies can be obtained from Dr. Gerald Steinfeld, telephone number +49-(0)441-798-5073.
