Sweden : A doctoral student with doctoral grant (KID-funding)
Karolinska Institutet has a vacancy for A doctoral student with doctoral grant (KID-funding)
at the Swedish Medical Nanoscience Center at the Department of Neuroscience
Department of Neuroscience
Description of research group and project
The Högberg research group is a small research group interested in building molecular tools out of DNA and in developing new ways of building self-assembled nanoscale object using DNA and other bio-molecules. Further, we would like to explore the use of these kinds of devices for therapeutic and/or diagnostic applications and cell signaling studies.
In general, our work involves the use of computer aided design and programming to calculate DNA sequences to be ordered or produced, followed by microbiology lab work to produce DNA and to fold the DNA into desired structures. Electron microscopy is used to study the structures once formed.
For this project the student will create protein-DNA nanostructures to be used to study cell signaling in-vitro.
Duties and responsibilities
We are looking for a chemist who is interested in working with DNA nanostructure production and protein-DNA conjugation. The PhD studies include 4 years full time work. This includes courses, seminars, conferences and scientific work. Furthermore, the project will give the student a possibility to develop an international collaborative network for future research. Information about PhD studies at Karolinska Institutet is available at the website: www.ki.se/doctoral.
Eligibility/Qualifications
The applicant must fulfil the criteria for eligibility for PhD education at Karolinska Institutet (see below). Good skills in collaboration are important to maintain a network of researchers within the PhD-project. Excellent abilities in English, both oral and written, are required. Documented analytic skills and knowledge in the areas of: DNA nanotechnology, organic chemistry, DNA-protein conjugation are also requirements.
To be eligible, the applicant must
1. hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree,
2. have completed course requirements of at least 240 HECs, of which at least 60 at second-cycle level, or
3. have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad.
Selection is made of qualified applicants on the ground of their ability to benefit from doctoral (third-cycle) education. Karolinska Institutet applies the following assessment criteria:
- Documented subject knowledge of significance to the research project.
- Analytical skills confirmed by a scientific dissertation or the equivalent.
- Other documented knowledge/experience of potential significance to doctoral (third-cycle) education in the subject
An overall assessment of the applicants’ qualifications will be made.
The vacancy will be filled on condition that the successful applicant is admitted to doctoral (third-cycle) education.
