Doctoral Candidate in the field of Political Science (Higher Education Policy)

Full-time,40 hrs/week
Fixed term contract : 3 years (possibility of renewal for a fourth year)
Student AND employee status

The successful candidate will be based in the Identités, Politiques, Sociétés et Espaces research unit, working within the disciplinary Political Science and the interdisciplinary European Governance research groups. Under the direction of Prof. Robert Harmsen, the candidate will have the opportunity of completing a doctoral thesis in the area of higher education (HE) policy. It is intended that the candidate’s work should broadly fit into the research programme already established within the framework of the ‘Euro-Uni’ project. As such, the intended research should normally address themes such as the ‘Europeanisation’ of higher education and research policy (including the Bologna Process and impacts of the Lisbon Agenda); the comparative study of domestic reform processes in the HE sector (including external influences); and/or the contextualisation of European HE policy trends relative to wider international developments.

Your Role
Completing a doctoral thesis in Political Science on an aspect of higher education policy
•Preparation of scholarly publications (conference papers, articles, etc.) in connection with the research area
•Providing occasional assistance in the organisation of seminars, conferences, and other research-related events
•Possibility of limited teaching on the Master in European Governance programme
Your profile
Master’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration or a cognate area.
Candidates holding Master’s level qualifications in other areas with significant experience of higher education policymaking processes will also be considered.
Excellent written and spoken proficiency in English. Proficiency in French and/or German would be an advantage.

Candidates should submit the following documents:
•Motivation letter;
•Curriculum vitae (including a list of publications if applicable);
•A short (6-8 page) thesis proposal. This should define a specific area of research interest and give an indication of the scholarly literatures to be engaged, as well as addressing questions of case selection and methodology as appropriate.
•Copy of diplomas
•Full transcripts of previous degrees
•The names and contact details of two referees (including MA dissertation/thesis supervisor where applicable).

The successful candidate should be able to take up the position no later than September 2012. An earlier date is possible by mutual agreement.
