The fellowship is for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work. Starting date no later than 01.05.2012

Job/ project description:

The Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMMS) Research Group is aiming to improve future networks and middleware for advanced multimedia applications. Multimedia does not only mean audio and video, but also sensor data of any kind. We investigate context-aware and self-adapting solutions for transmission, distribution and management of (multimedia) data. Our current research is centered around the following topics:

  • Home Care: Multimodal Event Systems and Applications
  • Future Internet: Autonomic Networks and Autonomic Systems
  • Future Media: Content Distribution and Mobile Applications
  • Emergency and rescue operations: Mobile Data Management Systems

The particular research challenge to be addressed in this PhD will be defined in cooperation with supervisors from the DMMS Research Group and the PhD candidate and must be well embedded within the research interests of the DMMS group.

For details about the groups current activities and results refer to http://www.mn.uio.no/ifi/english/research/groups/dmms/index.html

The 25% compulsory work requires the PHD candidate to serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) in the operating system course INF3151/INF4151. In this course students learn to design and implement their own operating system from scratch in six guided projects. Main tasks of TAs in this course include the correction and grading of design and code deliveries of the course participants and to properly convey feedback to them.

Requirements/qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Informatics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or similar. They must document excellent knowledge and good research results (e.g. as part of the Master Thesis) in at least one of the core research areas of the DMMS group. For the compulsory work it is mandatory that the candidate documents excellent knowledge and experience with operating system design and implementation, both high-level and low-level. Due to the teaching obligation we prefer candidates that are able to speak Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Since the DMMS research activities are also part of a large European Network-of-Excellence it would be an advantage if the candidates speaks another European language besides English.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline, must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission must be approved within three months.
