Norway : 2 PhD Positions in Color Imaging
The Norwegian Color Research Laboratory at the Faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology in Gjøvik University College invites applications for two 3-year full-time Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions in the context of the EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network project entitled Colour Printing 7.0: Next Generation Multi-Channel Printing (CP7.0).
The recruited researchers will work in a high-level international research environment within the Colorlab, at the premises of Gjøvik University College, and in close collaboration with other researchers from the CP7.0 network. As part of their 36 months contract, each ESR will spend 5-6 months in secondments to the other academic and industrial project partners. The ESRs are expected to enrol in a PhD program, and will also participate in a rich program of organized research training activities, enabling them for a future career as printing scientists and innovators who can assume scientific and technological leadership in the European printing industry.
The two ESRs will work on two distinct but related fields of research within the CP7.0 project, specifically, Position 1: Spectral modelling for multi-channel printers and displays, and Position 2: Design and development of spectral colour management workflows. A brief description of the research in these positions are given below. The candidates should make it clear in their cover letter which of the positions they are applying to.
Position 1: Spectral modelling for multi-channel printers and displays
A key problem for achieving consistent colour reproduction is to develop adequate colorimetric models of imaging devices, models that accurately and efficiently defines the relationships between the device control values and the corresponding colour. In the context of multi-channel devices and spectral reproduction, such models need to be spectral and the challenges for precision and efficiency increase drastically. This ESR will research new models and approaches for spectral modelling of multi-channel printers and displays, including the very important problems of model inversion, spectral gamut mapping, and paper-ink interactions. As an application area the ESR will consider specifically the problem of proofing, that is, colour-accurate simulation of a final print on a display or using another printing technology; particularly the concept of spectral proofing will be explored. Experience with colour imaging, printing and display technology, as well as strong analytical and mathematical modelling skills will be particular advantages for this position.
Position 2: Design and development of spectral colour management workflows
In this position the ESR will integrate state of the art research and development in spectral colour imaging to design and implement workflows, which utilize spectral data at input, exchange and output. The ESR will work closely with other ESRs in the project group, as well as with other researchers in the Colorlab, to develop and implement spectral reproduction algorithms, such as spectral modeling of input and output devices, model inversion, halftoning, gamut mapping, efficient color and spectral processing, and so forth. The ESR will explore requirements for one or more real applications such as art reproduction, or high-precision colour communication for the retail industry, and will develop and evaluate proof-of-concept solutions for these applications. The ESR will work within the context of a colour management workflow (such as the one proposed by the International Color Consortium), and will develop and test methods of encoding spectral data, and prototype a colour management module; incorporating a spectral connection space for data exchange and colour transforms. Experience with colour management and image processing, as well as strong programming skills will be particular advantages for this position.
Eligibility regulations
In accordance to the eligibility regulations for Marie Curie ITNs imposed by the EU, the ESRs to be appointed must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the host organisation’s country (Norway) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the appointment date. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. In addition, applicants for the Early Stage Researcher positions should fulfill the following conditions:Must have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree,
Must be, at the time of recruitment, in the first four years (full time equivalent) of their research careers, measured from the date they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate,
Should hold a good postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Printing Science, Colour Imaging, or other relevant field.
Applicants are expected to have an outstanding academic record, be highly motivated and proactive, have excellent organisation and communication skills, and be eager to disseminate research results through publications and presentations at international conferences and seminars. Fluency in English is a prerequisite.
General information
The positions are remunerated according to salary level 48 in the Norwegian national salary scheme, gross NOK 391 300 per annum, of which 2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme. Gjøvik University College is an equal opportunity employer and strongly invites female applicants. For further information about the EU project, see http://www.cp70.org, about the Norwegian Color Research Laboratory, http://www.colorlab.no, and about Gjøvik University College, see http://english.hig.no. For questions please contact Professor Jon Yngve Hardeberg (jon.hardeberg@hig.no).
Application procedure:Applications should be done online using the forms available athttp://english.hig.no/about/vacancies. Candidates should provide the following when making an application.
1) Motivation letter indicating which position they apply to and summarizing their
a) research background & competence (with publications if any),
b) interest in the position,
c) project impact to their career plans,
d) a short paragraph on the research they plan to do at this position,
2) CV
3) Two letters of reference
