Norway : PhD in Bioinformatics

A PhD position (3-4 years) is available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The position will be available to outstanding candidates within the field of bioinformatics. Landmark technology has made it possible to study tens of thousands of genes and proteins simultaneously. This gives an increasing need for bioinformaticians to organise and analyse the enourmous amounts of data that are generated. We encourage project proposals that include joint work with experimentalists.


Conditions for the PhD position

  • The candidate must prepare an application in cooperation with a potential supervisor at NTNU. The supervisor can be associated with any Faculty at NTNU.
  • Research groups supporting several PhD applications will be asked to rank the candidates in order of preference.
  • In the evaluation process emphasis will primarily be placed on the candidate's qualities. If two candidates compete equally the quality of the PhD projects will be decisive.
  • Applicants for the PhD position must hold a Master’s degree.
  • The position must commence no later than 1 July 2012.

2. Statement from the supervisor, must be signed by both the supervisor and the

relevant department at NTNU.

3. Complete CV with a list of publication for the applicant.

4. Copy of the candidate’s publications – limited up to 5 publications.

5. Verified copies of certificates.


The PhD positions are remunerated according to wage level 48, NOK 391100 per year, on the Norwegian State salary scale, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension fund. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions stipulated for public employees. The appointment of the PhD candidates will be made according to the Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges.


The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree: http://ec.europa.eu/education/policies/rec_qual/recognition/diploma_en.html.


The appointment of the PhD research fellow will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the PhD fellow position must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties.
