Today, about 700 employees advance the peaceful industrial and medical applications of ionising radiation and contribute to SCK•CEN's overall purpose: maintain a centre of excellence for research and peaceful applications of nuclear science.
PhD description
Currently, we are looking for a motivated PhD student to join an interdisciplinary research group at the Belgian Nuclear Research Center (SCK-CEN). The main focus of this PhD is the study of microbial diversity in deep subsurface geological clay formations in the context of radioactive waste disposal. Results obtained in this study will be used to assess the reliability of these clay formation for disposal of radioactive waste. The PhD student will be involved in the bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics data obtained using next-generation sequencing technologies (Roche 454 / Illumina).

Profile
The candidate should have a master degree in bioinformatics, bio-engineering, eningeering, informatics or biology/biochemistry. Basic knowledge of programming languages (eg. perl,phython,java), databases (mySQL, PostgreSQL) or statistical programming (R/Matlab) is a plus.
