Sweden : Doctorial Student in Particle Physics

The successful applicant will join the ATLAS group in the Lund University Particle Physics division. ATLAS is one of the big general-purpose experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The collider has already provided large amounts of proton-proton collisions at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy that has led to new worlds-best results, (such as sensitivity to Higgs bosons and new physics in general), as well as a few discoveries (Chi_b, jet quenching). With the center-of mass energy increasing over the coming years there is an unprecedented potential for many more discoveries in fundamental physics.

Job assignments

The candidate will primarily be involved in searches for beyond Standard Model physics in the leptonic channels, that carry the possibility of seeing hints of the existence of extra spatial dimensions, Supersymmetry and many other new phenomena. Analytical skills and experience in programming (preferably C/C++, Python, and/or Root) are required, and a Master Thesis in experimental Particle Physics would be an advantage.


The Lund ATLAS group collaborates closely with several other institutes and contributes to the overall operation of the experiment, in which also the student is expected to participate, in Lund and at CERN. Good English communication skills are therefore necessary, as well as the ability to work in an international environment.

Eligibility/Entry Requirements

The basic requirements for admission to postgraduate studies are: a degree at advanced (MSc) level, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 credits, of which 60 must be at advanced (MSc) level, or the equivalent knowledge or qualifications obtained in some other way, in Sweden or in another country.

Basis of Assessment

Regulations concerning the appointment of postgraduate students can be found in The Higher Education Act and Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80. The candidates will be selected from among the qualified applicants based on their ability to carry out postgraduate studies. In addition to pursuing postgraduate studies, postgraduate students may be required to perform other duties - including teaching, research and administration - according to the specific regulations in The Higher Education Act and Ordinance.

For special eligibility in Physics an independent project, equivalent to at least 30 credits is required, together with courses at advanced level that provide the relevant background for the planned area of research. The special eligibility may also have been achieved through other equivalent education.
