Germany : PhD in Biogeochemical Modelling

The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) GmbH in Bremen is a member of the Leibniz Association, which is supported by the German Federal and State Governments. Through its research, Leibniz-ZMT GmbH contributes to developing
science-based strategies for sustainable use of tropical coastal systems (www.zmt-bremen.de).

The ZMT has a vacancy for a Ph.D. student to start as soon as possible within the framework of a project titled “Effects of Indonesian coastal ecosystem degradation on the global carbon cycle”.

Background:
Indonesian peatlands cover almost 11% of the country’s total land area and store the equivalent of 123.5 Gt CO2, that is 6% of the global CO2 peatland reservoir. Anthropogenic land-use changes are exposing Indonesian peatlands to increasing degradation causing carbon to (a) outgas into the atmosphere as CO2 and (b) leak, via riverine runoff, into the ocean as dissolved organic carbon. To study the effects of these perturbations on ocean chemistry and atmospheric CO2, we plan to use a box model of the global ocean, which includes the tropical rainforest, the peatland, the seagrass, the coral reef, and the plankton. The general research aim is to understand the biogeochemical consequences of different emission scenarios from the degraded peatlands on the region and to asses the impacts on a global scale. The work will be performed with biogeochemical box models developed by the Systems Ecology Group of the ZMT and in cooperation with Jacobs University Bremen. The appointment i!
s for a three-year period. Salary will be according to the German TV-L 13 for a half-time position.

Requirements:
Applicants should hold a Master or “Diploma” degree in Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Geology, Physical Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, or Computing. The ideal candidate would have also experiences with the global carbon cycle. A good spoken and written English is mandatory. Although this is primarily a modelling study, the candidate should be prepared to make occasional visits to Jakarta to meet our Indonesian partners and to take part to a field expedition in the Spermonde Archipelago.

Application:
To apply, please send a short motivation letter (no more than one page), a complete CV with expertise and computing skills, and name, email address and phone number of at least one referee (thesis supervisor) in a single PDF-file to the address below. Only short-listed candidates will be notified.

Closing Date:
March 4th, 2012 or until a qualified candidate is identified. The Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology is an equal opportunity employer. Disabled persons with comparable qualification receive preferential status.
