Marie Curie ITN : TALENT ER2 (Atostek)

The EU-funded 7th Framework Programme has two main strategic objectives : to strengthen the scientific and technological base of European industry and to encourage its international competitiveness, while promoting research that supports EU policies.

As part of this programme, initial training of Early Stage Researchers (ESR) and Experienced Researchers (ER) is being offered through Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITN) which will improve their research skills and help them join established research teams. In parallel, complementary training will enhance their career prospects in both public and private sectors.

The TALENT ITN will provide career development for young researchers in the field of instrumentation for radiation detection. The ITN focuses on piloting new state-of-the-art technologies on the new precision pixel detector ATLAS Insertable B-Layer detector (IBL) and for future precision tracking detectors. TALENT will strengthen the co-operation between research and multidisciplinary industry in the fields of advanced radiation sensors, fast and low power consumption read-out and data acquisition electronics, new cooling technologies and ultra light mechanical support structures. More information on TALENT can be found on www.cern.ch/talent – there are also other ESR and ER positions available.

This fellowship is hosted by Atostek Oy, Tampere, Finland. The successful applicant will be based at Tampere, Finland.

Research project

Development of signal processing software in the online-data acquisition, the control and readout of the front-end electronics and off-line data analysis.

Description

The project will develop and apply a new parallel programming language and compiler to the signal processing tasks in the High Energy Physics application area. The aim is to accelerate the performance of the signal processing parts of software typically written in C or C++, simplify parallel programming, and enhance portability of the source code. As a result, a library of signal processing algorithms in portable source code will be written. Furthermore, the library will serve as a baseline software module for future adaptation in industrial applications.

Secondments

Secondments, typically of several months duration, to partner institutions of the network are an integral part of Marie Curie ITNs. The location of the secondment will be determined during the course of the research project and may include secondments to : CERN, Switzerland; Wuppertal, Germany; and Oslo, Norway.

Duration

Two years – starting September 2012.

TALENT offers a wide range of scientific and complementary skill training opportunities. Further information on TALENT's research programme and training opportunities can be found on the TALENT webpage (www.cern.ch/talent).

What We Offer

  • Attractive remuneration under employment contract for 24 months.
  • Generous training allowance in accordance with the European Commission’s allowances for ITNs.
  • For details of remuneration and training allowance, please see our add in CERN webpage

Eligibility Conditions

  • Experienced researchers must, at the time of the relevant deadline for submission of proposals or recruitment by the host organisation be in possession of a doctoral degree or have at least four years of full-time equivalent research experience. They must also, at the time of recruitment by the host organisation, have less than five years of full-time equivalent research experience.
  • The European Commission's mobility rules state : At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.
  • Eligble applicants should have a degree in the field of software engineering with a solid software background, including : experience in functional programming (Haskell, ML, F#, Clean, etc.); experience in parallel programming; preferably experience in programming language design and implementation techniques (compilation, interpretation, type systems, virtual machines); preferably experience in signal processing or high energy physics.
  • Proficiency in English is required; language training can be provided through the ITN's training budget.

Documents required

Applications should include:

  • a completed electronic application form;
  • your Curriculum Vitae;
  • a list of recent publications, if applicable;
  • a copy of your last (highest) qualification;
  • a covering letter briefly describing your proposed research activities and the way in which you intend to conduct the related research;
  • 2 letters of reference to give as broad as possible overview of your academic and/or professional achievements.

How to apply?

The application form and the other supporting documents must be submitted using the CERN e-recruitment system in the following link;

https://ert.cern.ch/browse_www/wd_portal.show_job?p_web_site_id=1&p_web_page_id=10141
