The Research Training Group (RTG) on Lorentz Force Velocimetry and LorentzForce Eddy Current Testing at Ilmenau University of Technology offers the following open positions:

12 full-time research positions for doctoral students
2 qualification scholarships to prepare for doctoral studies

The positions start 01 January, 2013. In exceptional cases the candidate can be appointed slightly earlier or later. The research positions have a duration of 1 ½ years with a possible extension for another 1 ½ years and are paid according to the TVL E13 scale of the German public sector (35.000 - 40.000 EUR per year before tax depending on age and marital status). The qualification scholarships have a duration of one year with a tax-free grant of 9.600 EUR (plus an allowance of 4.800 EUR for the first child, plus an allowance of 1.200 EUR for each further child). After having successfully passed the qualification phase, the scholars are invited to apply for a three year research position.

The measurement of flow velocities in hot and aggressive liquids like metal melts and molten glass is one of the grand challenges of industrial fluid mechanics. A physically closely related challenge is the detection of deeply lying flaws and inhomogeneities in electrically conducting solid materials. Since 2004, scientists and engineers at Ilmenau University of Technology have been developing two novel technologies termed Lorentz force velocimetry and Lorentz force eddy current testing to meet these challenges. Both technologies are based on measuring the Lorentz forces that are induced by the interaction of electrically conducting moving substances and magnetic fields.

The RTG is sponsored by the German Science Foundation DFG and has started in January 2010. Within the RTG, the basic physics of these technologies shall be explored by performing high-precision model experiments, high-resolution numerical simulations, and intense analytical modeling. The RTG provides a creative and inspiring environment, excellent laboratory facilities, state-of-the-art scientific computing facilities, and the possibility of collaborating with industry and with foreign institutions. The RTG strongly supports students wishing complete their PhD studies within a three year period.

Successful candidates for the research positions should have

  • an excellent Diploma or Master degree, preferably in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or applied mathematics,
  • an excellent knowledge of the English language,
  • a high motivation for interdisciplinary work in an international scientific team, and the commitment to complete the doctoral program within three years.

Experience in either fluid dynamics, measurement technologies, or high performance computing is helpful, but not required.

Ilmenau University of Technology aims to establish gender equality and highly encourages women to apply. Handicapped applicants with identical qualification will be considered with priority. Special services are available concerning all social matters.

We invite all applicants to e-mail the complete set of documents in PDF format by April 10, 2012 to lorentz-force@tu-ilmenau.de mentioning desired position, research area, and project number.

Preliminary information can be obtained from the Head of the RTG, Professor André Thess (thess@tu-ilmenau.de) or the Scientific Coordinator of the RTG, Dr. Christian Karcher (christian.karcher@tu-ilmenau.de).
