VU University Amsterdam is one of the leading institutions for higher education in Europe and aims to be inspiring, innovative, and committed to societal welfare. It comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 25.000 students.
The Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences (FALW) offers a range of Bachelor and Master programmes. Research at the faculty focuses on the fields of the life sciences, health sciences, environmental sciences and earth sciences. World-class teaching and cutting-edge research activities go hand in hand. FALW works together with other faculties like medicine, exact sciences, economics, psychology and social sciences. The faculty’s research facilities can be categorized as excellent. The faculty’s international focus fosters cross-border collaboration, leading to substantially improved quality and greater impact of our research results.
The applicant will be based in the Department of Spatial Analysis and Decision Support  ( at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). The department investigates the role of spatial variation in environmental systems to increase our understanding of environmental change and support environmental policy and management. The focus of the group is on land use change and its impacts on ecosystem services and society. Temporal dynamics and future scenarios are explored with spatial modeling of changes in land use and ecosystem services, including natural, rural and urban systems. Advanced methods for stakeholder participation and ex-ante evaluation are developed and tested to support environmental management and land use planning.
Contents of the research
The postdoc position is funded by the BiodivERsA project ‘Towards multifunctional agricultural landscapes in Europe: Assessing and governing synergies between food production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services‘. The overall objectives of this project are to i) to disentangle and quantify the multifaceted links between agricultural production, biodiversity and ecosystem services in different European landscapes; and ii) provide a learning environment that supports the design and evaluations of policy options particularly regarding the Common Agricultural Policy that can help to reconcile conflicting demands, namely the production of agricultural commodities (food, forage, bioenergy) while at the same time ensuring the provision of ecosystem services and conservation of biodiversity. Within the project consortium the postdoc will conduct a case study in the Netherlands developing methods to optimize landscape functions using a multi-scale perspective on the land-sparing and land-sharing perspectives. Furthermore, the postdoc will play an important role in the overall project synthesis and in the development of a learning environment that brings together tools that help reconciling conflicting demands in agricultural landscapes.
Functional requirements
The candidate must have a PhD degree in the field of landscape ecology, spatial ecology or geography with excellent communication and organizational skills to facilitate the synthesis of knowledge developed in the project consortium. Experience with simulation models, statistical analysis and spatial analysis techniques is essential. A thorough understanding of land use, landscape functions and ecosystem services is important. The postdoc will contribute to the supervision of PhD students as well as, possibly, making a small contribution to the teaching of BSc and MSc students.
