Postdoctoral position in Data driven and distributed algorithms for safe and sustainable transports, Sweden

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has about 70 faculty members and enrolls about 90 PhD students from more than 30 countries. The research spans the whole spectrum, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. There is extensive national and international collaboration with academia and industry all around the world.

Information about the research group
The Networks and Systems division at Chalmers University of Technology consists of 9 faculty members, 4 postdoctoral and 12 doctoral researchers. The division is active in a wide range of research topics in the fields of distributed computing, networked systems, systems security, parallel and multicore computing, data streaming, cyber physical systems and self-stabilization. In addition, the division contributes to interdisciplinary research at the intersection of ICT, transportation, energy, e-science and built environment. The group is running several national and international projects in collaboration with both academia and industry.

Information about the research and the project
As postdoctoral researcher you will join the Networks and Systems division and work at the intersection of Cyberphysical Systems and Big Data Analysis in distributed systems. Domains such as the energy sector, the transportation sector, the environmental sector are being equipped with devices to monitor and control the environment. These connected devices provide us with new insights into our daily life and we rely on data-driven analysis to extract these insights.

The research in this project involves distributed coordination, as well as parallel and distributed data-processing algorithms for cooperative traffic, situation awareness, and accident avoidance. A special focus shall be put on near real-time data-stream analysis.  The position is part of a pioneering initiative from the Chalmers Area of Advance Transport, in particular within Automated Driving and Safety. Complex challenges will be tackled jointly using top-notch research infrastructure, including possibilities of synergies with industry as well as strong interantional scientific networking. For more info on the initiative, as well as on living and working in Sweden:

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a postdoctoral researcher is to pursue research in collaboration with PhD students and faculty, towards the goals of the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position generally also offers the possibility of teaching and getting involved in related educational activities overlapping research and education(e.g. masters thesis supervision), up to approximately 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years, with an evaluation of progress after the first year.

Salary for the position is as specified in Chalmers' general agreement for postdoctoral researchers (approximately in the interval between 34 000 and 36 000 SEK, depending mainly on the date of your PhD degree). The position is intended to start in spring 2015, but a different start date can also be arranged.

Applicants should have an outstanding record of research, especially appreciating the value of combining foundational/analytical aspects and engineering practice. To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have a PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering or in a related discipline; the degree should generally not be older than three years. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both oral and written, are needed.

The ideal candidate for the position has a strong background in distributed computing and networked systems, including algorithmic aspects. Further experience with interdisciplinary projects or background in cyber physical systems, information security, or data science is helpful. You may apply even if you have not completed your degree, but expect to do so before the position starts. Knowledge of Swedish is not a prerequisite for applying since English is our working language for research. Both Swedish and English are used in undergraduate courses. Our researchers and PhD students at the department come from more than 30 different countries.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
