Job description:

The Mads Clausen Institute for Product Innovation (MCI) at the University of Southern Denmark announces an opening for a PhD position within the area of control and mobile robotics in relationship to the Cybersailing project.The MCI, part of the Faculty of Engineering, employs 90 people engaged in research and teaching in the field of product innovation.The Mads Clausen Institute is situated in the completely new university facilities at Alsion in Sonderborg which, besides the university, has capacity for a research park, a concert hall and a railway station.

The research of this PhD position will be within the Cybersailing project, aiming at discovering the principles behind autonomous navigation of sailing vehicles. With the current worldwide concern on environmental issues and energy-efficient technologies, our long-term goal is to use these principles to develop autonomous monitoring platforms (sensing buoys…) and intelligent autopilots of the future. The proposed thesis is concerned with motion planning and trajectory generation aspects of sailing systems.

The candidate must hold an MSc in Engineering or within a field related to the project, and have good skills in mathematical modeling. Additionally, since the project will involve programming and implementing feed-forward control strategies in either Matlab or Labview, programming skills in these languages are also desirable. Some basic knowledge on control would be appreciated, as well.

The stipend is a full 3 year scholarship.

Application, salary, etc.:

Students with a Master´s degree is salaried in accordance with the agreement on salaried PhD students between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Association).

Employment as a PhD Research Fellow is for a period of three years. Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the three/four-year period.
