Postdoctoral fellow in subduction dynamics, Norway

The Department of Earth Science, University of Bergen ( has a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow in subduction dynamics within the project SWAMMIS funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The postdoctoral fellowship is a fixed-term position; the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in his/her discipline. This position is for a fixed term of 3 years.

It is not possible for any person to work under more than one fixed term appointment as a postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.

Project/work tasks

  • We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research as part of a multidisciplinary project aimed at understanding the nature of metamorphic reactions in subduction zones and the role they play in triggering intraslab earthquakes. This postdoctoral fellow’s research will focus on the geodynamic components of the project, which include forward modelling of subduction zone dynamics, that takes into account dehydration reactions, metastable phases, and the effects of fluids on the deformation of the system. This work will be carried out in collaboration with seismological and petrological modellers, yielding comprehensive multidisciplinary constraints on metamorphic processes in subduction zone settings.

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • You must have completed a doctoral degree or equivalent in quantitative earth science, or have submitted your doctoral thesis for evaluation before expiry of the application deadline. It is a requirement that the doctoral degree has been completed before the decision to appoint can be made.
  • You must have relevant good skills in mathematics, programming and communication. Experience with code development in geodynamic modelling and a demonstrated interest in solid earth sciences are an advantage.
  • You must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and to demonstrate good      collaborative skills.
  • You must be proficient in both written and oral English.

Project proposal outline for the qualifying work

The appointee, together with the project manager / head of department, shall prepare a project proposal outline for the qualifying work, which shall comprise a description of the project and a progress plan outline. • a good pension scheme in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • good welfare benefits, inclusive workplace (IW)
  • the postdoctoral fellow will be part of a large team of staff, research fellows and postdoctoral fellows performing research on solid earth related topics in modelling, geodynamics, seismology, surface processes.

Further information about the position can be obtained from Professor Ritske Huismans, phone +47 55 58 81 17 or e-mail

The application must include

  • applicants should submit a brief (1-2 pages) statement of their research experience and intended research goals within the scope of this postdoctoral research project. This and other application materials should demonstrate that the candidate possesses good skills in mathematics, programming and communication.
  • the names and contact details of two referees
