PhD student position at the Institute of Biotechnology, Developmental Biology Program, University of Helsinki

Imaging cellular mechanisms of embryonic hair and tooth development

We use a combination of transgenic mouse models and organ culture methods together with confocal fluorescence imaging to investigate the molecular and cellular basis of epithelial morphogenesis (see e.g. Ahtiainen et al., Developmental Cell 2014, 28:588-602). The project aims to continue this research on the cellular aspects of embryonic hair development and also, using similar imaging based approaches, understand the early development of the tooth.

Desired skills and experience:

·         M.Sc. degree in cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, biochemistry, or related field

·         Conceptual knowledge of basic cell and molecular biology methods

·         Prior practical experience in cell biology or developmental biology is appreciated

·         Previous experience in imaging would be a strong advantage

The research takes place at the Institute of Biotechnology (BI), an independent research institute of University of Helsinki located at the Viikki campus 10 km north from the center of Helsinki. We offer a position in an internationally renowned multidisciplinary research environment. The group is a part of Academy of Finland funded Center of Excellence in Experimental and Computational Developmental Biology. You will have the opportunity to learn and be a part of research using leading edge imaging methodologies.

The position is Academy of Finland funded, full time, starting immediately or September 2015 the latest, and for three years with an option for continuation. The salary for this post is based on level 2 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff in the University Salary System.
