Call for applicants for nine (9) four-year doctoral student positions in the fields of humanities, education, business, and human geography at the University of Oulu, Finland

The Eudaimonia Research Center is dedicated to facilitate high-quality research and professional networking in human sciences. Its main goal is to support the research and educational activities of scholars in human sciences. Eudaimonia’s research focus covers interrelated disciplinary and cross-disciplinary themes for understanding and explaining society, culture and human behaviour. Research resides in research communities/groups situated in one of the related faculties or that cross faculty boundaries. Further information about the research communities in human sciences at the University of Oulu can be found on the Eudaimonia Research Center web pages (http://www.oulu.fi/eudaimonia/). Stimulated by the needs in human sciences, the ambition of the Human Sciences Doctoral Programme (EUDA-DP) is to foster a multidisciplinary environment for research and education. EUDA-DP offers a high-quality research training environment to educate researchers aiming for excellent positions in academia, industry and society. For doctoral students accepted into the EUDA-DP, we offer:

  • exposure to international research excellence in humanities, education, business, and human geography;
  • supervision focused on mentoring, assessment of learning and support;
  • multi-/interdisciplinary research options;
  • an active research community enhancing a strong research culture;
  • possibilities for international networking, and
  • transferable skills training.

The EUDA-DP invites applications for 9 four-year (2016–2019) doctoral student positions. Applicants should have a strong background and interest in human sciences, and be motivated to conduct research in a multidisciplinary environment.

Successful applicants for the EUDA-DP doctoral student positions are expected to:

  • start their doctoral training on 1 January, 2016;
  • work full-time on their doctoral training;
  • conduct research leading to a doctoral thesis related to the themes of the research groups in human sciences;
  • complete the doctoral degree at the University of Oulu within 4 years.

The work contract of new students selected for one of the doctoral student positions advertised in this call may include a four-month trial period at the beginning of their employment. The evaluation of the student’s aptitude and ability to continue the doctoral training within the EUDA-DP after the trial period will be carried out by the EUDA-DP Management Group. See the General Call Text for more information concerning the employment terms, eligibility and minimum requirements for the doctoral student positions.

Applications for the EUDA-DP doctoral student positions should include a scientifically significant research proposal which thematically fits the scope of the scientific fields represented by EUDA-DP, demonstrate the applicant’s qualifications and capabilities to develop into an independent researcher, and propose a principal supervisor, who is a professor, or docent-level researcher of high scientific standing at the University of Oulu and whose research represents the scientific fields of the Eudaimonia Research Center.

The evaluation and ranking of the applications will take place in three stages. First, all complete applications are evaluated and ranked by the research communities. Second, the research community leaders, or their representatives, cross-evaluate and cross-rank the best applications from each list from the first round. Third, EUDA-DP Management Group makes the final selection of candidates to be awarded the EUDA-DP doctoral student positions on the basis of the community leaders’ proposals. All applicants will be informed of the selection by e-mail.

All applications must include:

  1. A completed online “Application Form” (see below);

The following documents must be attached to the online “Application Form” as single Portable Document Format (PDF) attachments (i.e. compiled into a total of 4 separate documents). Each attachment will have the following respective file names: EUDA-YourName-CV; EUDA-YourName-Diplomas; EUDA-YourName-Plan; and EUDA-YourName-Reference. Replace “YourName” with your own last name (as in your passport).

Warning: Incorrectly named attachments may not be processed correctly.

  1. CV:   Curriculum Vitae of the applicant, including a complete list of publications (with full reference details) and previous funding of the research. (Max. size of the attachment: 5 Mbytes).
  2. Certificates/Diplomas:        Scanned electronic copies of diplomas and transcripts of the records of relevant previous degrees and, if applicable, a valid certificate of language proficiency (see the General Call Text). If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish. (Max. size limit: 2 Mbytes).
  3. Research plan:      approved by the proposed supervisor of the applicant’s doctoral training. The structure (i.e. the section headings) of the plan must follow the guidelines of the Academy of Finland (http://www.aka.fi/en-GB/A/Funding-and-guidance/How-to-apply/Appendices/Research-plan/). However, for the current purpose, the texts under the given section headings need not cover all bullet points in the guidelines. (Max. 4 pages + max. 1 page for references – Times New Roman 12 or similar font, 2 Mbytes).
  4. Other attachment:  A letter of reference from a senior scientist working at the University of Oulu, and who is proposed as, and is interested in being, the applicant’s Principal Supervisor. This letter will include a justified recommendation for the recruitment of the applicant. The applicants are also strongly encouraged to consider with the proposed supervisor a suitable research community that best fits their research (http://www.oulu.fi/eudaimonia/research_communities): the choice should be clearly indicated in the letter of reference (Max. size limit of the attachment: 2 Mbytes).

Important:    Unless explicitly stated in the letter of reference, the recommendation of the proposed supervisor does not bind the latter to any form of commitment in the event that the selection committee does not award the position for which the letter of reference was provided to the applicant. If the supervisor provides a letter of reference to more than one applicant, the supervisor may be asked later, during the selection process, to provide the selection committee with a justified ranking of the applicants.
