At the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, a position as postdoc in stem cells and neurodegeneration is available for appointment from 1 May 2016.
An 18 months full time position is available for a highly motivated candidate to join our group for Stem Cells and Embryology at the University of Copenhagen in May 2016. It is also possible to adjust the employment duration to a two year position with a 30 hour work week. The position will concentrate on research within iPSC generation from dogs with canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) and age-matched control dogs, differentiation of these iPSC into functional neurons, astrocytes and microglia as well as subsequent in vitro studies of pathological phenotypes.
The group for Stem Cells and Embryology at the University of Copenhagen is focused on generating iPSC lines from patients with neurodegenerative diseases and subsequent analyses of the disease phenotype in relevant neural subpopulations.
The postdoc will work on a project financed by FTP. The research is focused on developing stem cell-derived models for Alzheimer’s disease and related. The overall aim of the project is generation, characterization, verification of known disease phenotypes as well as the discovery of novel disease related cellular pathologies using canine CCD-specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC). Furthermore, the project aims to use these cells as in vitro neural cell models that will ultimately contribute to the identification of customized treatment. Our group focuses on the following neurodegenerative diseases: Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Partners: FTP partners are the University Hospital for Companion Animals at Frederiksberg Campus and the Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Southern Denmark.
•PhD in relevant scientific area (Genetics, Stem Cell Biology or Neuroscience)
•MSc in biological science with a basic molecular biology background
•Proven expertise and experience in neuroscience research using ES and iPS cells, NPC’s and neurons including neural differentiation. Expertise with animal models in neurodegenerative disorders will be considered an advantage.
•Experience with handling research animals and capability of conducting experimental research including behavioural analyses will be considered an advantage.
•In depth knowledge of human molecular biology and genetics with focus on neurodegenerative disease.
•Expertise in developmental biology with emphasis on neuronal development.
•Experience with iPSC and ES models for neurodegenerative diseases.
•In depth knowledge within cell culture and functional cell culture assays
•Excellent written and oral communication skills
•Demonstrated capacity for effective team work
•Fluency in English and excellent communication skills
•Ability to work self-driven towards a united goal
•The postdoc will report to Poul Hyttel and Kristine Freude
•The postdoc is expected to interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics.
Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The gross basic salary range for Postdoctoral Fellows is DKK 32,000 to DKK 33,700 per month (around EUR 4,200-4,500) (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. An additional 17.1% monthly contribution to pension will be paid by the employer.
The position is time limited to an 18 months period with a 37 hour working week or 24 months with a 30 hour working week.
