The Department of Social Research offers a position for
for a fixed term from 1 March 2016 to 28 February 2017 or according to an agreement.
The duties of the Post-Doctoral Researcher will include independent research work in a project funded by the Academy of Finland on the topic of “Transnational Muslim Marriages: wellbeing, law and gender”. In addition, data collection, publishing, and participation in general activities of the project are included in the duties.
The multidisciplinary project examines marriage among Muslim migrants. The focus of this project is the experiences of Muslim women and men in Finland regarding lived realities of marriage impacted by state law and Muslim family laws as well as transnational family life. In addition, the challenges that the existence and use of parallel normative systems may pose to Finnish policies and legal system are studied in the project.
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of post-doctoral researcher shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, the appointee must have knowledge on questions related to Islamic family life and also previous research experience on the topic. Excellent oral and written proficiency in English is necessary for completing the duties associated with the position.
The applicant is expected to present a research proposal that fits into the overall project. In particular questions related to polygyny would promote the project whole. So far already existing sub-projects are ”Transnational Somali Finnish families in Finland: Discourses and lived realities of marriage” and ”Governing plurality: marriage practices and the law”.
The salary for the position will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The salary is EUR 2979–4020 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The employment contract will include a probationary period of four months.
