Doctoral Candidate position in structural reliability of timber structures

The Department of Civil and Structural Engineering is seeking to hire an outstanding Doctoral Candidate for research on structural reliability of timber structures. The research includes aspects such as numerical modelling of timber and engineered wood products, the use of probabilistic simulation techniques, structural reliability analysis and code calibration.

Research Group
The doctoral candidate position is located in the group for wooden structures at the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering (Department of Civil Engineering from the beginning of year 2016). The group for wooden structures is a newly established research group at Aalto University. Main research areas are structural reliability in timber engineering, timber grading, and assessment of wooden structures. Required background: A Master’s degree in civil engineering, preferably in structural engineering.

Important skills: Strong background in structural mechanics and timber engineering, good analytical and problem solving skills, good skills in writing and communicating in English, active reporting and interaction with project members.

Contract and salary
The doctoral candidate position is contract-based; one year (a two-year) contract is granted first, followed by a possible extension for a three-year (a two-year) period depending on the achievements during the first contractual period. In a maximum of four years, the doctoral candidate is required to 1) complete the doctoral dissertation, 2) finish relevant courses for 40 ECTS credits and 3) participate in teaching. The applicant must fulfill the requirements for entitlement to do postgraduate studies at Aalto University:
