At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Center for Industrial Production, a PhD stipend is available within the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science. Place of employment can either be in Aalborg or in Copenhagen. The position is open for appointment from September 1, 2016 or soon after. The PhD project is carried out in a collaboration between Aalborg University, Qualiware (www.qualiware.com) and Manufacturing Academy of Denmark (www.made.dk) as part of the MADE work package 5 on Digitalizing the Supply Chain, providing a very attractive research environment.
The research will be within architecting digital manufacturing. Digital business and the Internet of Things refer to the emerging trend of enterprises creating new business designs by blurring the physical and digital worlds. In manufacturing, this is called Industry 4.0 (or the 4th industrial revolution) and cyber-physical systems. Digital business is focused on the intersection between business, people and things. A leading-edge digital business will include the connection or integration with assets (business, people and things) in the ecosystem. What makes digital business uniquely different from e-business and classic digitalization is the specific integration with "things" (including sensors, beacons, wearables, smart machines, etc.) as equal entities.
Digital business demands a new perspective toward the scope of the enterprise architecture practice, towards what Gartner calls vanguard enterprise architecture, where innovation, co-creation and mosaic transformation are central. This also marks an expansion of focus from delivering IT services to "business" (inside-out), to address the needs of customers and constituencies (outside-in) and to enabling new business designs by also looking beyond/outside the enterprise into the world, or ecosystem, of currently unknown (outside-out). In addition, the locus of attention for the architects will shift from problem solving to problem finding.
Digital business design is becoming a practice field in more and more enterprises, and Gartner has identified an emerging market for digital business design platforms. As a tool for vanguard enterprise architects, a digital business design platform must be a comprehensive toolset for defining, designing, developing and deploying digital business. QualiWare has embraced digital business design to such an extent that we already today do not hesitate to call our tool a digital business design platform, and continues to develop an appropriate design platform. Newly released features include a range of new modeling features, such as business ecosystem, outside-out analysis; Catalysts, drivers, emergence, risk analysis; Scenario planning, outside-in SWOT; Business model canvas and value proposition design; Business capability mapping and analysis; Operating model analysis; and Value portfolio management and investment culture analysis. All of which are enabling “digital to the core”, as Gartner calls it.
The candidate must hold a relevant IT Master's degree, and preferably the candidate has experience working with industry.
Applicants are expected to have excellent analytical and technical skills, especially knowledge of and interest in industrial manufacturing issues.
The applicant must have good interpersonal and communication skills, as the project is carried out in close collaboration with many different stakeholders from different cultures.
The application must include a tentative PhD plan outlining a structure of research and analysis to be performed in the PhD project as well as evidence of academic degree and qualifications, and a CV documenting the candidate’s professional record.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
