The central question of this PhD-project is: How have public debates interacted with the development of animal experimentation and alternatives for animal experimentation in the Netherlands in the period 1950-2016? The historical literature on the (inter)national development of animal experimentation and its alternatives is remarkably scarce. Also a long-term analysis of the evolution of public debate on animal use in the Netherlands is lacking. Most studies are confined in time (mainly to the period up to 1940) or restricted to a single aspect of the many factors involved, such as animal ethics. This project is committed to approach the theme from a wider context, in order to develop a multi-dimensional long-term perspective on animal experimentation. The results of the project may be helpful to institutions such as the RIVM in developing policy options for the future. Moreover, the outcomes of this study will contribute to building up a collective memory to serve the public debate on this controversial topic.
Digital history methods will be employed in a ‘hybrid’ research methodology.
While a clear affinity with historical research is indispensable for this PhD-project, candidates from various backgrounds in the humanities and social sciences are invited to apply. Demonstrable experience with digitized sources is a plus. A completed MA, MSC (or doctorandus) degree is required for consideration. The successful candidate must be able to start on the project per 1 November 2016.
The candidate is offered a full-time PhD-position for four years, with an evaluation after one year.
The salary is supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,3% per year. In addition we offer: a pension scheme, a partially paid parental leave, flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities. The research group will provide the candidate with necessary support on all aspects of the project.
The gross monthly salary coming with a fulltime appointment will amount to € 2,174 in the first year to € 2,779 in the fourth year (P-scale of the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities).
