The Department of Information Technology (http://www.it.uu.se/) currently has about 280 employees, including 30 professors, 110 academic teachers/researchers and 115 PhD students. More than 4000 students study one or more courses at the department each year. We cover a wide range of topics, grouped into five themes: Computer Systems, Computing Science, Scientific Computing, Systems & Control and Visual Information & Interaction. Each of these themes is in itself a major subject area, where we both conduct basic research and have projects with links to applications in for example Engineering, Biology, Medicine, Economy and Psychology. The broad scientific foundation is reflected in a large number of collaborations across academic disciplines as well as with industry and the public sector.
Research project: Imaging and image analysis are a large part of modern medicine. Advanced imaging techniques are available, however surveys show that less than half of the captured images are quantitatively analysed. Automation of image analysis and efficient utilization of the acquired data are a necessity for cost effective health care. The proposed PhD project will be focused on development of the theoretical foundation for a novel class of methods applicable to multiscale and multimodal image analysis and on validation of these methods in challenging research and clinical bio-medical applications.
Methods applicable in object detection, recognition, registration, and quantitative object characterization will be developed, primarily targeting applications in microscopy. Research will be linked to a larger project aiming to facilitate multiscale ultrastructural analysis of transmission electron microscopy images. Of particular interest is to generalize the developed methods to analysis of heterogeneous information-rich data, coming from different sources (e.g., acquired from a same sample by different microscopy techniques).
The project will be conducted at the Centre for Image Analysis within the Division of Visual Information and Interaction.
Qualifications: The candidate must have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in computer science, mathematics, or related areas relevant to the PhD topics. Good programming skills, excellent study results, good communication skills, good command of both spoken and written English, are required. Expertise and experience in digital image processing and analysis are meriting. Prior knowledge of Swedish is not required.
The position is for four years, but may be extended by teaching and department duties (at most 20%). The PhD education includes taking duties in courses related to the research subject.
How to apply:The application should include a letter describing the applicant’s motivation for applying for this PhD position, relevant qualifications and research interests. The application should also include a CV, copies of translations (to English or Swedish) of diplomas and transcripts of relevant exams and grades, the MSc thesis (or a draft), two letters of recommendation and contact information to reference persons, and other relevant documents (such as, e.g., scientific publications). The earliest possible starting date should be indicated. Please note that applications can only be accepted via the web interface linked below.
Rules regarding PhD positions can be found in the Higher education ordinance chapter 5, §1-7 (https://www.uhr.se/en/start/laws-and-regulations/Laws-and-regulations/The-Higher-Education-Ordinance/), and the goals and regulations of Uppsala University (http://regler.uu.se/Rules_and_regulations_in_English/).
