A two-year postdoctoral position is declared available at Uppsala University: Postdoc in applied nuclear physics with speciality in the development of techniques for safeguards of spent nuclear fuel at the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Div. of Applied Nuclear Physics, starting January 1, 2017, with a duration of two years.
Assignments: The employment is a research position on the development of techniques for safeguards of spent nuclear fuel. A special focus lies on the program Next Generation SafeGuards Initiative (NGSI).
Within NGSI there are a number of different techniques for safeguards of spent nuclear fuel under investigation. The primary goals are to measure the quantities of fissile material in the fuel as well as to detect any partial diversions of the fuels. Both passive and active techniques using both neutron as well as gamma measurements are under consideration.
The objectives of the postdoctoral work are to continue the development of the simulated properties for these measurements as well as to participate in measurement campaigns at the facility for interim storage of spent nuclear fuel (CLAB) in Sweden, where a selection of the techniques in NGSI are planned to be tested on actual spent nuclear fuel.
The department of applied nuclear physics at Uppsala University have research cooperation with the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in the USA. It is expected that candidates for this postdoc position will be able to travel to USA as a part of their duties.
Admission requirements: To be eligible for a postdoctoral employment, the candidate must hold a PhD degree within a relevant field of research, not older than three years at the closing day of the application.
Evaluation criteria: Extra attention will be paid to scientific skills. Qualifications in nuclear technology are highly rated. Practical experience from nuclear measurements as well as simulations of neutron and gamma transport with Monte Carlo computer codes are of particular interest for this position. Since the research will be performed in an international collaboration, experience from international collaborations will also be considered.
Periods of leave, such as parental leave, that may be taken into account should be stated in the presentation of personal experience and qualifications. The department is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance and female candidates are particularly invited to apply.
Pay: Individual salaries

The application must be written in English and contain a letter in which the applicant describes her/himself, her/his qualifications, research interests and plans for the future. It shall contain a CV, copies of relevant grades, and a list of previous research publications of relevance, including the applicant's doctoral thesis. Other relevant documents may also be included (e.g. letters of recommendation or names of reference persons).
