Within the context of the EU‐funded Marie Curie European Training Network (ETN) Optomechanical Technologies there is an open position at the Niels Bohr Institute for a PhD student in the field of Cavity Optomechanics.

You will: •be supervised by experts in this field;

  • take charge of an exciting research project;
  • research in close collaboration with partners within the Marie Curie European Training Network;
  • participate in innovative training modules, including a series of hands‐on workshops that provide technical, transferable and presentation skills, international conferences, and outreach activities.

Description Nano‐ and micromechanical oscillators are in our modern information age indispensable technologies that enable navigation, timing, motional sensing and wireless communication. MEMS sensors, that is silicon micro‐machined mechanical oscillators, measure rotation or acceleration and are commercially contained in any modern cell‐phone, plane or car. In the past decade a technological and scientific revolution has taken place around the optical and quantum control of such NEMS and MEMS devices; following quantum control of ions, molecules in a first wave, as well as electrical circuits in a second wave, NEMS and MEMS can now be read out and controlled at the quantum level using optical fields via cavity optomechanical interactions. The ETN research focuses on optomechanical technologies (new technologies based on optomechanical physics) and aims to advance the state of the art in the field by addressing several new research directions.

Project description In the project at NBI you will probe the motion of mechanical resonators—membranes with sub-micron to millimetre dimensions—in new regimes. Coupling them to microwave and optical resonators allows to measure their displacements at the attometer level, realise quantum-limited photon-phonon conversion and entanglement at cryogenic temperatures, and develop novel room temperature sensors for applications in medicine and communication. You will harness these effects to transduce microwave and optical fields, with applications as amplifier or frequency converter. The research involves design and fabrication of nanomechanical hybrid devices, quantum optical and microwave measurement techniques, numerical simulations using finite-element methods, and quantum-mechanical modelling of the system.

Requirements •Strong background in physics at the master level

  • Proficiency in English both oral and written
  • Experience in any of these fields is a plus, but not a necessity: fabrication and modelling of nano- and micromechanical devices, superconducting electronics, cryogenics and quantum optics

Eligibility As per the ETN mobility rule, the applicant must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of his/her host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment.

Terms of employment The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 305,291 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 42,171).
