At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Copenhagen, a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The PhD position is open for appointment from 1 April 2017 or soon hereafter. The Department consists of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Environmental Technology, one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering and one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology. The PhD position is located within the section for Sustainable Biotechnology (SSB) with workplace in Copenhagen. SSB's integrated research approach is combining fundamental biotechnology with bioprocess engineering. The overall aim is to develop biomass conversion systems for the sustainable production of chemicals, fuels and materials (including feed and food). Research is mainly focused on the biochemical conversion of biomass into bioenergy and valuable by-products in biorefinery systems.

The PhD stipend is linked to an external research project funded by the COWI foundation for improving resource recovery of sewage sludge and organic waste to increase the sustainabililty of wastewater treatment. The focus of the PhD project is to investigate the production of biogas and volatile fatty acids or other valuable biobased products from sewage sludge and indusrial organic waste streams. The project will include research in anaerobic microbiology and process engineering. Optimization of the fermentation process will demand characterization of the biomass input, screening of suitable microorganisms and their improvement in lab-scale batch and reactor tests.
Applicants to the PhD scolarship must hold a M.Sc. degree in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or similar. The candidate should bring experience in experimental work. Experience with fermentation processes, specifically in anaerobic digestion processes will be of advantage.
You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Hinrich Uellendahl, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, phone: +45 9940 2585, email: email@example.com concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
