The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE), Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3 year PhD position in Robust Congestion Management and Self-healing for Active Distribution Networks.
The PhD project is a DTU/NTU double degree project. (DTU is Technical University of Denmark, and NTU is Nanyang Technological University, Singapore). The PhD student is required to stay in NTU for one year to fulfill the requirements of the double degree.
In the future power systems, it is expected that more distributed energy resources (DERs) will be present in distribution networks. It will be essential to include the DERs in the planning, operation and control of distribution networks in order to realize cost efficient and secure solutions. DERs will provide ancillary services to the system level balancing. The operation of large scale DERs has inherent uncertainties. It is important that the operation of DERs does not violate the physical constraints within electric distribution networks while taking into account uncertainties. The presence of DERs also gives the opportunity to deal with contingencies in distribution networks. Self-healing will improve the overall supply security of distribution networks.
Responsibilities and tasks
This PhD project will investigate robust congestion management and distributed self-healing methods to improve the resilience of active distribution networks. The distribution system operators (DSOs) may use market based or direct control methods to influence the behaviors of DERs to alleviate potential congestions in distribution networks. The self-healing method is to handle contingencies in distribution networks. The project is to further develop market based methods to solve congestions in distribution networks by influencing both flexible demands and distributed generation and taking into account uncertainties. The project will also develop distributed self-healing methods based on IEC 61850.
- Develop robust market based methods to alleviate congestions in distribution networks caused by demands and/or distributed generation
- Develop distributed self-healing methods based on IEC 61850
- Implementation and test of the developed methods
Candidates should hold a MSc in electrical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the MSc in engineering. Candidates with the following knowledge will be preferred:
- Fundamental knowledge about the power system operation, control and analysis
- Electricity market
- Good at optimization theory, familiar with one of the optimization software, such as GAMS and Matlab
- Knowledge/experience about power system automation
Approval and Enrolment
