The Division of Energy Science at Lulea University of Technology (LTU) has an open PhD position in the subject of Energy Engineering. In your research you will develop thermochemical processes (e.g. gasification processes) for effective and sustainable phosphorus recovery. You will both work with researchers from different fields (energy-, chemical- and waste technology) and universities / institutes (national and international) and with the process industry and equipment manufacturers.
The subject of Energy Engineering at the Division of Energy Science belongs to the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. At the subject of Energy Engineering we work closely with companies/industries in both research and student projects. The research conducted has high international standards, and we collaborate with researchers around the world.
Energy engineering includes the development of technologies and processes for a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy efficient use in industry and society.
As a PhD student you will work for a doctoral degree as the final goal, according to the goals specified in the Higher Education Ordinance. In parallel with your thesis work, you will also undertake courses during your research education.
Your PhD project is a part of an ongoing project funded by the Swedish research council which is performed jointly by researchers from the subjects of Energy Engineering and Waste Technology at Luleå University of Technology and Thermochemical processes at Umeå University. You will do gasification/combustion experiments in lab- and pilot scale rigs and characterize the produced ash fractions with different chemical- and physical analytical methods. Theoretical models will be used to facilitate the interpretation of the experimental findings.You will also participate in international projects with researchers from the Technical University of Vienna, an Energy technology institute in Austria (Bioenergy 2020+) and with an Austrian gasification technology owner where one of the objectives is to recover phosphorus from indirect gasification of phosphorus-rich manure and sludge.
A doctoral student’s main responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies with the aim to successfully defend a doctoral dissertation. The PhD position is for 4 years full-time. The position may include departmental duties with up to 20% of full-time employment.
The work location is Luleå but parts of the experimental work will be performed at Umeå University (Sweden) and at Technical University of Vienna (Austria).
We look for PhD candidates with a degree of Master of Science in chemical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering or similar specialisations, with a strong interest in new green technologies. You should be a good team player and have an ability to take initiative. You should also have a good knowledge in the English language and good oral and written proficiency. Experiences in high temperature chemistry and/or thermochemical conversion are considered as advantages.
